Crime prevention for children

To stay safe at home and in your town, kids need to know how to recognize the danger of crime. Crime is anything bad that people do that's against the law, and it can put kids and adults in very risky situations! To make it less likely that crime will happen around you, it's important to always pay attention to what's going on around you and to follow some easy safety tips.

Definition of Crime Prevention

Most of the time, kids and adults are safe from crime, whether they're at home, at school, or in the park. Still, a little bit of crime happens every day, and no one can guess when. Crime prevention just means learning the rules of safety that will let you recognize crime and do the right thing fast! This usually means leaving the dangerous area right away and telling an adult you trust. Sometimes, you might have to do other things, too. Crime prevention is about knowing what to do and when. Don't worry -- it's easy!

Basics of Crime Prevention

What's the most important part of crime prevention? Don't daydream ... always pay attention to the people around you. Bad people usually make you feel scared and uncomfortable, so if you feel that way, tell an adult you trust: A teacher, police officer, or your parents. When you're at home, always lock your doors and windows so bad people can't get in. Remember that even if you're alone, you can always call 911 to get the police to come help you. If you use a cell phone, make sure your phone has the numbers of adults you trust so you can call for help if you need to.

Street Safety

Street safety just means knowing how to stay safe when walking around. It's very important to be street safe if you're going somewhere! If you're walking to school or somewhere else, always stay with other groups of kids. Don't use "short-cuts" where bad people can hide: Stay on the sidewalks near main roads and look both ways before crossing the street. Don't cross a street or parking lot between parked cars, and always make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Don't leave home without getting adult permission. Your parents need to know where you'll be!

Stranger Danger

What does a stranger look like? A stranger is anyone you don't know! You can't tell if a stranger will be bad or good by looking, so you should always be very careful. Never go with a stranger anywhere, even if they know your name. Don't even go with an adult you know unless you were told you should by one of your parents that very same day. Don't talk to strangers, take candy or anything else from strangers, or ever approach a stranger's car or animal. Strangers might act like they need help, but if they do, they should ask an adult. Always stay at least three steps away from a stranger, out of arm's reach, no matter where you are. If a stranger grabs you, shout "This man (woman) isn't my dad (mom)!" and keep shouting until someone helps!

Safety Basics

At home and away, lots of things happen that could be dangerous. If you see something you know is dangerous or a crime, like someone stealing or someone carrying a knife or gun, go tell a parent, teacher, or police officer as soon as you can. If someone you know is doing something dangerous, get yourself out of the situation safely by calmly making up a reason to walk away, even if it's just to go to the bathroom, and tell an adult. Don't start a fight with them! If someone steals from you, get adult help right away so you can tell them everything you remember about what happened.

Sexual Abuse Prevention

All kids need to know the difference between good touch and bad touch. Your body belongs to you, and no one has the right to touch it in a way that makes you sad or scared. Strangers should never, ever be allowed to touch you at all, and even adults you know should always use the "Underwear Rule." The Underwear Rule means you should never be touched by anyone in the areas covered by underwear unless it is a doctor with your parents' permission. If anyone ever touches you in the wrong way, tell a parent, teacher, or police officer as fast as you can.
