“Alexa, play Miles Davis.” “Alexa, add milk and eggs to my grocery list.” “Alexa, see who is at the front door.” Wait, what? Yes, you can absolutely tell Alexa to advise you if the person ringing your doorbell is a UPS driver with that delivery you’ve been expecting … if you have a SkyBell® doorbell camera.

SkyBell doorbell and Alexa, Amazon’s well-known virtual digital assistant, are great tools that, when integrated, offer a range of capabilities to help you manage your home security.

Home security with SkyBell

In the old days, checking to see who was at your front door required walking up to it and peering through a peephole, assuming you even had one. Thanks to technologies like Alexa and SkyBell doorbell, however, you can see who’s at your door (and even answer it) from any room in your home. If the visitor appears to be an unwanted intruder, you can call emergency services — without even leaving the playroom where you’re keeping an eye on your kids.

SkyBell and Amazon Alexa integration

If you’re new to SkyBell and already use Amazon Echo, you may be wondering how to accomplish a SkyBell-Alexa integration. It’s actually pretty simple:

  1. Open the Alexa app on your smartphone, go to Skills, and search for SkyBell

  2. Select SkyBell, click “enable,” and log in using your SkyBell credentials

  3. Then follow the prompts to connect SkyBell and Alexa

Now that Alexa and SkyBell are connected, there are all kinds of things you can do to control your front door hands-free:

  • Record live video of your front door and save it to your account for later viewing

  • Take a still photo of your front doorstep

  • Turn the indoor doorbell chime off and on depending on your needs

SkyBell commands for Alexa

There are many features of Alexa-SkyBell commands that can help you enhance your home security, manage home deliveries and visitors, and even turn your SkyBell doorbell on and off. Here are a few features of your SkyBell Alexa integration you can easily use with simple voice commands:

  • To enter “quiet mode” and keep your SkyBell doorbell from ringing, say, “Alexa, tell SkyBell to turn on quiet mode.” Amazon Echo will respond with, “Your SkyBell is now in quiet mode.”

  • To exit “quiet mode,” say “Alexa, tell SkyBell to turn off quiet mode.” Echo will respond with, “Your SkyBell’s quiet mode has been turned off.”

You can also ask Alexa to turn the SkyBell doorbell’s motion sensor on or off, start and stop live video recordings, or take a photo of the visitor at the front door. You can even ask Alexa to turn off the indoor chime in case, for example, you don’t want visitors to wake a napping toddler or interrupt focused concentration-time while you are working.

Managing multiple SkyBell devices

What if you have multiple SkyBell doorbell camera devices in your home? One at your front entrance gate, one at your front door, and another on your covered back porch where you often ask delivery personnel to leave packages? No problem. Your SkyBell Alexa integration will work with multiple SkyBell doorbell devices.

When you have only one SkyBell doorbell, Alexa will immediately begin working with it after setting up your SkyBell-Amazon connection. However, if Amazon Alexa detects multiple SkyBell devices, you will have to choose which device you want to connect to and operate. For example, you may select Device Number 1 to operate the camera at your front gate or Device Number 2 to take a picture of the delivery guy at your front door.
