When looking to find peace of mind for your family, a home security system can help make the difference to make your home feel secure. However, many people wonder what will happen regarding their home security if there is a power outage. Here are some things to bear in mind when there is a power outage regarding your home security system.

One safety precaution you can take is having an additional 24-hour battery on hand to power your home security system. Depending on how long power outages usually last in your area, this might be a very valuable option to consider.

Types of Systems

If your alarm system operates over landline monitoring, it will continue to communicate with the monitoring center in the event of a power outage. Cellular monitoring is generally a safe bet as well in the event of a power failure. Like a cellular phone, communication is unaffected by localized power outages as long as the battery in your sensor’s battery are functioning. Broadband monitoring is the most vulnerable in power outages because a loss of power usually results in an Internet outage as well.

Without an Internet connection to a monitoring center, these types of systems stop communication until the power is restored.

If you have broadband monitoring, consider the following tips to help you stay safe in the event of power failure.

In the event of a power outage, it’s always a good idea to keep a supply of batteries, flashlights, and an external charger for cell phones. If your home security runs on anything but broadband, it should stay up and running, keeping your home safe.
