Window sensors are a great addition to any home security system and to keep your home safe and secure. There are many different types of window sensors, each with a specific function that is meant to ensure your home and your family are protected. These sensors are perfect for a wide range of things and knowing where to place them can make all the difference in their overall function. Here are a few tips on how to optimize your window sensor placement:

Types of window sensors

The most basic of window sensors are those that are designed to alert when the window is opened. These work on the principle that the two pieces of the sensor are in contact with one another when the window is shut, then is opened when the two pieces break the connection and the alarm sounds. When this happens, you are alerted and can then take action. Another type of window sensor is a glass break sensor. These work on frequency – so when a specific frequency is sounded, the sensor will alert you immediately. The type of sensor you have can make a huge difference in the effectiveness of the system and in where the sensor ultimately needs to be placed.

Why does window sensor placement matter?

  • Visibility

  • Access

  • Specific Location

The overall placement of your sensors matters when it comes to their effectiveness. For starters, the visibility of your sensors is going to make a difference. Sensors that are easy to see are also easy to remove and or be tampered with. You want your sensors to be placed in a good position on the window but not where little hands can move them around or mess with them. You also want to think about how easy they are to get to. Sensors that can be easily manipulated are a no-go, so you want to make sure they are only accessible from inside the house and that you can get to them if needed.

You also want to take into account the window itself. Larger windows may need two sensors or more specific placement, and smaller windows may not be suited for sensors at all. Your installer can tell you more about the window itself and what method is going to be best when it comes to alarming them.

Do you need help with window sensor placement?

For the most effective placement, you should allow a professional installer to do the job for you. The installer can make a huge difference in the overall effectiveness of your installation and that of your window sensors as well. You can have a great system, but without the sensors being placed correctly, they may or may not work when they are needed. The right placement can mean the difference between a sensor that is going to sound and one that is going to falter if your window is opened or the glass is broken.

Overall, location is one of the most important elements of any window sensor installation and the proper placement makes a huge difference in the effectiveness of your sensors.
