Z-Wave is a wireless network that connects home automation devices. The technology works on the principle of a mesh network. This means that devices will pass signals to one another through an intermediary device, allowing one to send a wireless message to another that would otherwise be out of range. Each device has a 300 foot range, so as long as each device is within 300 feet of at least one other device, the whole network can be as large as you need it to be. In fact, a Z-Wave network can support up to 119 devices, giving you over 69,000 feet of total coverage. This is more than sufficient for even the largest of properties.
Each device in the network has its own unique ID, making it easier to set up as well as remain secure. It also won’t interfere with other wireless networks, such as Wi-Fi, meaning it is completely compatible with any other system that’s already running. One of the best features of the Z-Wave hub and its devices is that they can be controlled remotely. Mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones can check a Z-Wave network from anywhere. These capabilities give users full control of the functionality over their Z-Wave devices from anywhere. Even appliances plugged into a Z-Wave Appliance Module can be turned on and off remotely. Connect it to a television to give the illusion that someone is home even when your house is empty. The mobility of Z-Wave products is one of the technology’s greatest attributes.
Z-Wave Plus is essentially just an extension of Z-Wave. It’s a certification that devices receive for utilizing the new features of the next generation, or Gen 5, of Z-Wave. The new generation enhances the user experiencing by improving speed and ease of installation. Z-Wave Plus builds on the original specifications of Z-Wave by using the latest advancements in this exciting technology. With the introduction of the Next-Gen, Z-Wave has extended its capabilities, including increased range, extended battery life, Over The Air upgrading (OTA), additional RF channels and more – all of which are fully compatible with existing Z-Wave products. These enhancements offer tremendous benefits in terms of shorter and easier installations, richer device profiles, improved self-healing and longer battery life.
Although Z-Wave and Z-Wave Plus are very similar, there are clear improvements that were made to the Gen 5 that Z-Wave Plus certifies. Some of the main differences between Z-Wave vs Z-Wave Plus include:
Battery – Z-Wave Plus offers 50% more battery life.
Range – Devices are able to communicate up to nearly 200 feet further with Z-Wave Plus.
Installation – Z-Wave Plus allows new devices to automatically connect to the network, allowing for an easier installation process.
Bandwidth – The network is able to handle 250% more data Z-Wave Plus.
Diagnostics – The Z-Wave Plus new Explorer Frame feature allows devices to address issues on its own and allow for peak efficiency.
