How to Add a Smart Thermostat to the GC2 Panel
This brief instructional video demonstrates how to successfully program a GoControl Z-Wave battery-powered Thermostat into your GoControl GC2 panel:
Relative placement of devices:
- It is recommended to first install the GoControl Z-Wave battery-powered thermostat into its final location before you begin programming.
- Connect the common wire between the thermostat and the HVAC system. This will allow you to use the current HVAC system's 24V A/C power to operate the thermostat.
- Note: You have the option to power up the thermostat using the 4 x AA batteries instead of the HVAC system's 24V A/C power, but this will prevent you from using the thermostat as a z-wave repeater.
- Ensure the panel and the device are within 5 feet of each other. If needed, disconnect the panel from AC power and walk the panel over to the location of the thermostat, running via backup battery.
Preparing the thermostat for programming:
- Navigate to the GC2 panel toolbox. Select the services button, then Z-Wave, then the wrench icon. Enter the installer code, which is usually 1561 by default.
- Note: Z-Wave devices, such as the Z-Wave thermostat, may need to have past programming removed before they can be added to a panel, even if they are new. For this, we need to run the removal process (I.e. exclusion).
- Select the remove devices button until the Remove Z-Wave Devices menu appears.
- Press & hold the thermostat fan button for 5 seconds until you see SETUP on the thermostat's screen.
- Press the up (or down) arrow buttons until ZWAVE appears on the thermostat's screen.
- Choose Select by pressing the mode button, and INSTALL will appear on the thermostat's screen.
- Again, choose Select by pressing the mode button, and DONE will appear on the thermostat's screen.
The GC2 panel will display an on-screen notification "A device has been removed from another network," when completed successfully. Press the ok button then the back button to return to the main menu for programming.
Programming the thermostat:
- Press "add devices", and the Add Z-Wave Devices screen will appear.
- Press & hold the thermostat fan button for 5 seconds until you see SETUP on the thermostat's screen.
- Press the up (or down) arrow buttons until ZWAVE appears on the thermostat's screen.
- Choose Select by pressing the mode button, and INSTALL will appear on the thermostat's screen.
- Again, choose Select by pressing the mode button, and you will see WAIT, followed by SUCCESS, followed by DONE appearing on the thermostat's screen.
The GC2 panel will display an on-screen notification "Device discovered, Querying device information...". Do not exit this screen until you see the details of the thermostat display. You may press the back button to return to the main menu.
